What We're Up Against

1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime.

95% of breast cancers occur randomly and are not hereditary

Breast cancer is the second-most common cancer in women and leads to more than 43,000 deaths each year.

The five-year relative survival rate for localized breast cancer is 99%.

1 in 3 women – more than 400,000 – die from heart disease every year.

90% of women possess one or more risk factors for heart disease and don’t know it.

About two-thirds of women who die of heart disease had no recognizable symptoms.

80% of cardiac events may be prevented with education and action.

The numbers are alarming, we know, but there’s real hope in beating breast cancer and heart disease. Prevention and early detection are key, as is adopting a healthy lifestyle. Because while 95% of breast cancers occur randomly and are not hereditary, the earlier the detection, the higher your survival rate. And controllable factors such as nutrition, weight and physical activity can prevent about 80% of heart disease-related deaths each year.

WBHI empowers individuals to take control of their breast and heart health through education, self-advocacy and risk-reduction strategies. Know your numbers and be aware of your vulnerabilities; learn how to recognize symptoms and changes in your body that may indicate disease; keep track of the screenings you should undergo and when; and implement the healthiest, most preventive lifestyle you can lead, as all of these things are powerfully viable tools against both diseases.
